Self-assembly of an ultra-high-molecular-weight comb block copolymer at the air–water interface

چکیده
The self-assembly of a newly synthesized, amphiphilic comb block copolymer (CBCP) at the air–water interface was systematically explored using the Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) technique. The CBCP had an ultra-high molecular weight (Mw 1⁄4 510 10 g mol ) with polystyrene arms grafted along one block of long hydrophilic backbone. At the air–water interface, the CBCP molecules spontaneously assembled into ribbon-like structures and cellular patterns at zero surface pressure when a volatile solvent (i.e., chloroform) and a less volatile solvent (i.e., toluene) were used, respectively. This spontaneous self-assembly behavior of the CBCP was induced by the dewetting process. The mechanism for the morphological change as a function of surface pressure was scrutinized and further confirmed by compression–expansion cycle and solvent vapor annealing studies. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of self-assembly of ultra-high-molecular-weight, amphiphilic CBCPs at the air–water interface. As such, it provides insight into the design of controllable pattern formation using amphiphilic copolymers.

Polystyrene-Polylactide Bottlebrush Block Copolymer at the Air/Water Interface
Hydrophobic ultrahigh molecular weight bottlebrush block copolymer and linear block copolymer of polystyrene-polylactide (PS-PLA) were shown to be capable of forming Langmuir monolayers and exhibiting unique assembly behaviors at the air/water interface, which cannot be addressed by the classic theory of Langmuir monolayer of amphiphilic copolymers. New models were proposed to illustrate these ...
متن کاملThe dramatic effect of architecture on the self-assembly of block copolymers at interfaces.
Dramatic morphological changes are observed in the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film assemblies of poly(ethylene glycol)-b-(styrene-r-benzocyclobutene) block copolymer (PEG-b-(S-r-BCB)) after intramolecular cross-linking of the S-r-BCB block to form a linear-nanoparticle structure. To isolate architectural effects and allow direct comparison, the linear block copolymer precursor and the linear-nanopa...

We report the self-assembly of monolayers of spider silk-like block copolymers. Langmuir isotherms were obtained for a series of bioengineered variants of the spider silks, and stable monolayers were generated. Langmuir-Blodgett films were prepared by transferring the monolayers onto silica substrates and were subsequently analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Static contact angle measurem...

A series of well-defined copolymer brushes, PS-g-P3HT, composed of a hydrophobic coil-like PS backbone and densely grafted rod-like P3HT side chains were successfully synthesized by a combination of the quasiliving Grignard metathesis (GRIM) method, reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT), and click reaction. The molecular weight distribution of the resulting PS-g-P3HT copolymer...

A new and facile strategy to fabricate composite thin films with tunable morphologies via self-assembly of block copolymer molecules at the air/liquid interface is first reported. The morphologies (parallel nanowires and foams) of these freestanding thin films can be tuned by varying the molecular structure or other experimental conditions.
